CS:GO Matches of the Week for May 8-14: Do or die for Heroic and Na’Vi at ESL

Esports Asia News

There is no shortage of CS:GO happening from one week to the next and it can be tough for even hardcore fans to keep track of it all, so we’ve narrowed down your choices to the few must-watch matches of the week.

Natus Vincere vs. Heroic

  • Where: ESL YouTube
  • When: May 11
  • Why: Last few matches of ESL Pro League EU
It’s the final week of ESL Pro League Season 5’s regular season and less than half the European LAN slots have been decided. North and surprise breakout mousesports are the only EU teams that have have punched their tickets to Dallas, Texas. This leaves teams like Natus Vincere in a bit of limbo, while the likes of Heroic risk dropping into the relegation matches, making their match up important for different reasons. After their weekends at DreamHack Tours 2017, neither Na`Vi or Heroic look particularly good going into the matchup as both teams were eliminated in the group stage. Heroic were the first to depart, following a 16-10 loss to mouz on Cobble and a 2-1 series loss to Misfits in the losers’ round. While Na`Vi opened their group with a 16-5 win over Misfits on Train, things fell apart for them after a 16-3 loss to mouz on Mirage and a 2-1 series loss when they met Misfits again in the decider round. The two teams are also fairly even in their previous head-to-head matchups. Na`Vi beat Heroic twice in the online qualifier for IEM Season XI Katowice, by winning 16-9 on Mirage and 16-4 on Nuke. But at the Katowice LAN itself, Heroic defeated Na`Vi 16-12 on Overpass. Considering how evenly matched the teams are, the victor will likely be who makes the best mental recovery from their beating in Tours.

Luminosity Gaming vs. Team Liquid

  • Where: ESL YouTube
  • When: May 11
  • Why: Last few matches of ESL Pro League NA
Team Liquid has made several adjustments to their lineup, such as the inclusion of a real in-game leader in stanislaw and the replacement of a stagnating player in Pimp for Twistzz, but we’ve yet to really see the team come together. They finished in 5-6th at the cs_summit, a poor result for a team that will soon be heading into the next Major in a few months. Liquid currently sits in fourth place with 45 points in ESL Pro League Season 5 NA, a cushy spot for the Top 6 placing needed in order to qualify for the LAN Finals in Dallas, Texas. However, their place is not yet guaranteed and their qualification is threatened by teams such as Luminosity Gaming. Though LG are objectively the third fiddle Brazilian team in the world, when compared to the likes of SK Gaming and Immortals, it’s clear they still have the brains to innovate and pull off high-level plays like this:
yeL preemptively popped a Molotov in the corner of the window position to prevent NRG’s smoke from bouncing. This gave yeL a small gap to peek mid and found an uncontested pick. It’s the type of play that will undoubtedly be replicated in high-level games in the future and likely more tricks like this will be sought out as well in other positions. LG currently stand in 10th place with 36 points in the league, but if they can sweep Liquid and The Foundation, that would give them an extra 12 points, putting them in serious contention for a LAN spot, depending on the results of the other top teams in the league. With $750,000 on the line for the EPL finals, a prize pool that nearly rivals the Major’s one million dollar prize pool, neither team will want to miss out.
