ELEAGUE to host $250,000 show match between Astralis and Virtus.pro

Esports Asia News

ELEAGUE announced Tuesday the “Clash for Cash: The Rematch,” a $250,000 show match between Counter-Strike giants Astralis and Virtus.pro. The best-of-three match will take place at 10 p.m. June 16 and be broadcast on TBS (as well as on Twitch and YouTube). The match will feature the two teams that met in the thrilling three-set finals of the ELEAGUE Major in January. ELEAGUE will try to recreate the magic of the Major final, in which Astralis defeated Virtus.pro at the Fox Theater in Atlanta (12-16, 16-14, 16-14) to win the $500,000 first prize in January. The match broke Twitch viewership records with more than a million concurrent viewers on the same channel. It is also widely considered one of the best finals in Major history. Since the ELEAGUE Major, Astralis has reached at least the semifinals of every tournament it’s played, including winning IEM Katowice in March. Virtus.pro, meanwhile, won a rematch against Astralis in the semifinals of DreamHack Las Vegas in February before going on to win the event. Since then, however, the Polish powerhouse has struggled. VP failed to make the playoffs in StarLadder Kiev and on its home soil in IEM Katowice. In the months since the Major, Astralis has developed a stronger rivalry with FaZe Clan, as the two teams met in the finals of StarLadder Kiev and IEM Katowice and again in the semifinals of IEM Sydney last weekend. Still, in the most recent batch of world rankings from HLTV, Astralis and Virtus.pro are ranked Nos. 1 and 4, respectively. The match will also serve as an appetizer for ELEGUE’s return to CS:GO in September, as the organization announced Friday the 16-team ELEAGUE CS:GO Premier, which starts Sept. 1. Check out a preview video for the match below.
