G2 Perkz: “After (last) spring split, you could say I had an ego clash during the summer split because I thought I was a lot better than everyone else by a big margin.”

G2 mid laner Luka “Perkz” Perkovic said it’s easy for mid laners to slot themselves on a scale because of Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok. Speaking at a press conference after G2 won the European League Championship Series spring split Sunday, Perkz said Faker influences the way he feels about himself as a mid laner. “It’s kind of easy (to rate yourself) for mid lane because we have Faker, who is our own metric,” he said. “It’s how good you are from 1 to Faker, you know? As close as you can get is how good you can be. So I just watch VODs, listen to anything I can get from anyone, try to implement my style, and that’s how you get to that level.” Perkz was also asked if he thought he was the best mid laner, to which he reluctantly responded that he did. Faker has been an overwhelming force in professional League of Legends for the last four years. He’s widely recognized as the best player in the world and also in League of Legends history. When comparing players within their positions, Faker is the benchmark. There isn’t a much room for debate among different players or teams to decide who is the best in the world. As long as Faker is playing, it’s settled. What Perkz said is funny because being a mid laner, a player doesn’t really need to worry about that being the best in the world and can instead focus on individual development. Perkz said he has increased his dedication significantly in the last year to doing that. After bursting onto the scene last spring and winning Europe’s Rookie of the Split award, Perkz struggled at times during the summer split and also at the League of Legends World Championship, which was a disappointment for G2 as a whole. But in Sunday’s press conference, Perkz said his struggles have humbled him. “After (last) spring split, you could say I had an ego clash during the summer split because I thought I was a lot better than everyone else by a big margin,” Perkz said. “And whether I was or maybe I wasn’t, that’s not even the point. I got kind of a reality check at worlds. It hit me really hard.”
