Hjarnan: “When I play, I don’t care who I face. Even when it’s someone like Bang and Wolf.”

[hkes_show_google_ad] After the upset against Misfits, we got to talk to Roccat’s ADC Hjarnan about the revival of Roccat, the game against Misfits and his attitude towards playing against opponents that seem better on paper. Congratulations for the win, how do you feel right now? I obviously feel pretty good. We played really bad in the first four/five weeks of LCS but now we’re starting to get confident, starting to play our game basically. It’s a lot easier to play the game right now than in the week where we were constantly losing. How would you define playing “your game” as Roccat? Essentially we base a lot of decisions on seeing what the opponents do and deciding whether we want to explicitly counter it or follow through with our own plan. In the past we always went for our plan first and then halfway down the line we played way too reactionary depending on what our opponents threw at us. So now we take a bit more time to see whether we can counter our opponents. Before we knew what to do as well, we knew how to react to what opponents did but we were never certain of the calls we made. We played way too indecisive. So when you lose four to five seconds because you can’t make your mind up, a good call becomes a bad call. You said that you gained a lot more confidence, how did that happen? Well it’s not due to us winning more scrims or something like that, we’re actually not doing that well in scrims (laughs). We just have more trust in one another. When we were 0-7 everyone was feeling super down. We basically hit rock bottom. We didn’t have the mindset we needed in order to compete against good teams. But after the win against Origen we gained a lot of confidence, and now we’re on a winning streak! It’s just so much easier to play when you win (laughs). All of the blockades are just gone. The psychologist coming in also helped us deal with our problems. From the Origen win onwards, it was basically a snowball-effect. Did the changing Meta have any effect on your team’s abilities as well? Hm… Not really, no. I don’t think the Meta changes were relevant to how we play the game. Let’s talk a bit more about the game against Misfits just now. Let’s be honest here, you guys weren’t the favoured team in this match, yet you definitely were the better team on stage, absolutely no doubt. How does it feel beating the favoured team? When I play the game, I don’t really care about who I face. I don’t go “Oh my god, I’m facing this guy who’s really well known”. I’m up against a champion that has set abilities and that I’ve played against so many times before. Even when it’s someone like Bang and Wolf, I don’t care, I don’t think about specific players. Of course you have to adapt a bit in very specific cases, like when you play against FORG1VEN who is super aggressive, you can’t play passive because he’s just going to harass you all the time. But in general, I don’t care whether a player is better than me based on what a statistic say. In regards to Misfits, I think they played really weird. I guess they were really shocked to loose the first game and were really scared to loose the second game also, hence why they played so indecisive, or they choked, I don’t know which one it was. As of right now, you are the number one ADC across all regions when it comes to average damage per minute. You beat out Bang, you beat out Deft, you beat out all the great ADCs across all the different regions, do you take pride in this fact? It’s a fun statistic I guess. … Is that it? Yeah, it’s cool I guess. It means I do at least something right if I’m first in something like this. Now that the team is performing, are you guys looking at making a strong appearance during Summer Split, similar to what Splyce did in 2016? It’s really hard to say. Again, our scrims are actually quite bad. Our scrim games are chaotic and random but once we get on stage, we play super focused and everyone is tryharding. It’s really weird. That’s why it’s hard to say how we’re going to perform in the Summer Split. [hkes_show_google_ad]
