Immortals have signed former Longzhu Gaming and ROX Tigers coach Sang-soo “Ssong” Kim as their new head coach for the 2017 NA LCS Summer Split. “When I had my initial conversation with Immortals’ management, I felt very good about the team after the conversation.” Ssong said in a press release. “The players are very hardworking and passionate about the game. They are very open towards criticism and they want to improve every day. Also the coaching staff and the players provide very positive environment to work with. I am excited to show the improvement that we will have as a team.” Ssong last coached Longzhu Gaming in the LCK, but is best known for his time as the head coach of the ROX Tigers. Ssong joined the Tigers halfway through the 2015 season, then stuck with them through 2016, helping them take second in the 2016 LCK Spring Playoffs, first in the 2016 LCK Summer Playoffs and 3rd-4th at the 2016 World Championship. Ssong is replacing Robert Yip as Immortals’ head coach, though the press release does not mention if Yip is leaving the organization or if he has been demoted to assistant coach. “Ssong is well-respected in Korea for his competence and ability to manage both player relationships and in-game strategy,” Immortals CEO Noah Whinston said in the press release. “We’re excited to work with him not only on turning IMT’s roster into a contender in the short term, but also on developing our promising rookies for future splits.”
