Misfits Academy found a buyer for its slot in the European League of Legends Championship Series in the German team Mysterious Monkeys. The German company ad hoc gaming GmbH, which owns the team Mysterious Monkeys, announced the purchased Misfits Academy’s EU LCS spot Friday for an undisclosed amount, while the Misfits official Twitter account confirmed the sale later in the morning. The Misfits tweet suggested an “official announcement” will come soon. Per Riot Games’ rules, a team cannot hold more than one spot in any of the top leagues of professional League of Legends. Misfits already owns a spot in the European LCS, so when its academy team qualified through the Challenger Series, the organization had to sell the spot. This was the final time academy teams were even allowed to compete for an LCS spot, as they will be banned starting in the summer split. That same rule was implemented in North America this spring. Misfits Academy qualified for the LCS through the Challenger Series spring split playoffs, defeating FC Schalke — the favorites to win the playoffs and the promotional tournament — 3-1. Misfits Academy defeated Origen in the promotion tournament 3-0 and then qualified for the LCS after defeating Fnatic Academy, the second Challenger team to make it to the promotional tournament, with a 3-2. Fnatic also holds an extra spot in the LCS as its Challenger team qualified for the LCS by eliminating Giants Gaming from the promotional tournament. The summer split for the EU LCS starts in two weeks, so the new franchise will have to be announced soon.
