SKT Wolf: “A pro’s ladder rank is actually pretty important. Kkoma believes that too, but he tells me I’m an exception to the rule.”

[hkes_show_google_ad] SK Telecom T1 has secured their place in the LCK Spring Split Playoffs Finals after a dominant performance throughout the split, a trend that has carried through to their latest victory in which they defeated the ROX Tigers 2-1. Despite losing Game 2 to ROX Mickey’s otherworldly Ahri performance, Faker and the rest of SKT struck back with their own Ahri composition to secure the victory in Game 3 and close out the series. Faker was voted the MVP of the final set, but compared to previous splits, he is trailing Crown and Mickey as one of the league leaders in MVP points. Not only does this win secure SKT a first place finish in the regular season, but also awards them with a bye to the finals for the upcoming playoffs. After the game we had a chance to interview, SKT’s support player, Wolf, who talked about their latest victory, his post-season wishes, as well as his overall reflections for this regular season.
Q: How do you feel about your victory today? A: We lost the series against Samsung Galaxy, so I went in slightly concerned. That loss kind of sucked, but I’m glad we’re heading to the finals.
Q: Can you summarize your games against ROX Tigers? A: The 1st set was relatively error-free. In the 2nd set, I feel the loss was due to my mistakes, so I’m going to go back for some proper feedback. As a pro gamer, I always believe my team can win, as long as I play well. Today, my plays in the 2nd set were not up to par.
Q: Mickey’s Ahri was extremely potent in the second set. What were your thoughts during the game? A: I knew a potential Ahri could be dangerous in the pick and ban phase. Thanks to Shen, Ahri was able to play the map even more aggressively. I had to risk my life for vision control, so as a support player, it was a tough game.
Q: Bang’s Ezreal went for Blade of the Ruined King as his first core item in the Set 1. Any comments? A: Blade of the Ruined King received a lot of buffs, so it seems to be used more often. I think he built it first, since it gives you more control over the lane. In the 3rd set, I think he went for other items first since his farming was slower.
Q: You’re heading straight to the finals for the Spring Split. What are your thoughts, when looking back at this regular season? A: Looking back at my daily life, I think I went into matches with a relaxed mindset. I didn’t take practice lightly, but I think I loosened up when it came to external factors. I think we were vulnerable when we lost some games. Our losses against Afreeca Freecs and Samsung Galaxy exposed our weaknesses the most. We were slightly afraid, since we were on winning streaks.
Q: Is there a team you want to face in the finals? A: I personally want Samsung in the finals. I made a mistake in lane during our last game, and I want to pay them back.
Q: What do you think was the cause of your loss against Samsung? A: I think we were behind them in terms of invading. Samsung prepared well.
Q: Support players sometimes pick champions like Brand, in order to stand out. Do you have regrets on not picking those types of champions? A: It would feel great if I can get the MVP with aggressive picks. But I think fundamentals are the most important in a team game. Karma and Nami can cover and carry a team, based on the player’s abilities. I also believe I’m the best at playing those types of champions.
Q: You fell to Diamond in solo queue. Does it bother you? A: A pro’s ladder rank is actually pretty important. Kkoma believes that too, but he tells me I’m an exception to the rule. He just asks me to stay in Masters, at least. I’m not too sure about my solo rank, to be honest. Support players often move to other positions because they are frustrated in solo queue. I personally don’t favor duo queue. You can’t play with a positive mindset when you’re blaming someone else.
Q: Bang talked about you in his ‘1000 kills’ interview. He said you’re a business partner, but your relationship seems deeper than that in reality. Any comments? A: In private, I talk about how support players need to have their own videos like the ‘1000 kills’ interview. I think giving support players that type of incentive will be a big motivational factor, so I hope they make a lot of those. Bang and I spend great times together. We also raise dogs together as well, so yeah.
Q: Your Redemption usage stood out today. Some players use it too late, so what would be your advice on picking the right moment? A: You have to give a lot of thought on what can potentially happen. When the opponent has an assassin or a lot of crowd control effects, I accumulate all those variables and decide on a timing. In today’s games, ROX Tigers had a lot of CC. It’s good to hit Redemption as soon as you get hit by CC. The fight starts as soon as someone gets hit by CC, so it’s good to use it immediately.
Q: Any final comments? A: Today’s win secured us a place in the finals. We practiced hard since our loss against Samsung, so making it to the finals gives us a bit more room to breathe. I’m sure the fans feel the same way. We’ll play hard so we can perform in the future. Thank you. [hkes_show_google_ad]
