Fnatic’s 3-0 sweep of H2k-Gaming in the EU LCS Spring Playoffs is now a matter of history, but it likely wasn’t the outcome that many expected. The all-European roster had a season of highs and lows, and veteran top laner Paul “sOAZ” Boyer has been with them the whole time. As Fnatic heads into their next playoff match against G2 Esports this weekend, we asked sOAZ about the challenges the team has faced, how he’s handled the pressure, and how they managed to pull out the broom against H2K. What has been the biggest challenge for Fnatic this split? The biggest challenge for us this split was/still is probably ourselves, when we feel good as a team we have really good coms and play, but sometimes we don’t feel 100 percent ready due internal issues or scrim related things and we tend to play a lot worse or have weird [pick/ban] or less communication. In a past AMA, you said “as a pro there is only highs and lows no middle ground, so it’s in the same time really good and really bad.” Do you still believe that? Where does this season rank? Well, yes some days are really good and some really bad, it all depends about our scrim results/LCS results, if you are a top team that is 9/1 you will most likely face a lot less issues than a team that is at the bottom: for us it was 50/50, some good weeks and really bad ones, it’s like a normal season to me. How do you personally handle pressure or tough times? I don’t have any tips or anything, some days you wake up and it feels easier to deal with the pressure or team issues and some days you really don’t want to deal with anything at all. You’ve said in the past that you wanted to work on your patience in-game. How have you tried to develop that, and how would you rank your results? I believe that if you’re on top of your game it’s pretty easy to deal with that, since you’re always thinking ahead. In the past I used to play by instinct and it changed slowly through the years since the game evolved a lot and people started playing better and better. Who has been your favorite teammate over your LCS career, and why? [Johannes “puszu” Uibos] for sure, looking back it was probably my favorite year as a player, back then it wasn’t as tryhard as it is right now, why? I think in my opinion he was the perfect teammate you could possibly ask for and super fun to hang out with. How do you view the team’s matchup against H2K? What were the keys to Fnatic’s victory? I think they were just not ready to play against us, they are probably more used to playing slow games and we just kept forcing fights and objectives. I think we played better than expected but they also played a lot worse.
